The Celtic languages are modernising themselves rapidly, and the most important catalyst of this change is poetry. The literaturWERKstatt berlin has invited the twelve best Irish, Scottish, Welsh and Breton poets to the poesiefestival berlin, and presents on two evenings the full richness in sound of the Celtic languages. Twelve German-speaking poets translate their Celtic colleagues, and vice versa. In addition, Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill and Gabriel Rosenstock perform examples of Séan-No singing, a traditional Irish form of song which emanates from the phonetic characteristics of the Celtic languages. The results of the translation workshops will be published next year by the Verlag das Wunderhorn in an anthology that will appear in Ireland and Germany.

Supported by the Irish Embassy, the French Embassy, the embassy of Liechtenstein, the British Council, the Scottish Council, Kulturamt Pankow, Wales Arts International and Pro Helvetica.

We thank the following organisations who have provided workspaces for the workshop:
Der Salon in Grünen, Kulturbund Treptow, Deutsche Gesellschaft für technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) GmbH, Haus Ungarn/Collegium Hungaricum, Literaturprogramm Wolkenbügel, Theater unterm Dach, Irish Embassy, Bibliotek am Luisenbad.
